“Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.”
Numbers are important. Reaching a large number of lost people is important, numbers on the scale and in our bank account are important. Increasing and decreasing numbers. Picking which to raise and which to lower, that is the key, in every area. Cholesterol numbers are no different.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance your liver produces to help hormone function in the body, digest bile salts in the intestines , make vitamin D , and help cell wall function and support.
This waxy substance is also found in the food we eat. Too much of it circulating in the blood is known as high cholesterol.
This is an area where you need to know the normal to abnormal values, as well as your own. Let’s talk definitions and numbers:
LDL—–Low Density Lipoproteins —–The bad cholesterol, remember “L” = Loser if it builds up in the blood it can contribute to plaque buildup in the coronary arteries.
For patients with a previous cardiac event this number should be less than 70
For everyone else the number should be less than 100
HDL—–High Density Lipoproteins —-Are the good cholesterol, they help move excess LDL out of the arteries and back to the liver and processed before excreted from the body.
For patients with previous cardiac events this number should be greater than 60
For everyone else a number greater than 40 is acceptable.
Triglycerides are fats in the body and in food. Excess triglycerides in the blood are also linked to Coronary Artery Disease. Avoid all food containing Trans Fats.
For all people this number should be 150 or less

****Foods we eat and heredity play factors in our cholesterol results. Knowledge of your numbers and how to get them within normal range are important factors in preventing further events. Highly processed foods that contain high amounts of sodium, MSG, and hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils should be avoided. Learn the truth about these really bad oils.
****Fresh fruits and vegetables….5-9 serving per day
***Lean meats (not cured, smoked)…1-2 per day
**** Limit whole grains and legumes ….3 —4 max (especially if you have metabolic syndrome— no one needs 9-11 servings of grains per day……who thought that was a good idea? ……are we cows?)
****Fats —-eat good fat, it is necessary for metabolic function and strengthening cell wall membranes —mono-saturated fat (will be discussed in the coming days).
****Avoid ….SUGAR…. ONE serving per day or less…….really, it’s killing us. (will be discussed in the coming days)
Get moving, increase time on your treadmill or daily walk, do the extra block, or 10 stores in the mall (just leave your wallet at home).
Remember those important numbers.
Losing weight and exercising helps increase HDL, and lower LDL.
Be wise and knowledgeable about your disease and always remember God is number one and will always be there to help you.
