You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
The former way of life, or perhaps the current way of life that is just stubborn and wants to continue to please it’s desires. Notice it says “deceitful” desires. What are our greatest desires? Wealth, fame, prestige…maybe for some, but not for the average person, like you and me. Those are not even in the mix.
Many have a desire for money and just can’t make enough to satisfy the desires of their lifestyle, therefore they make as much as they can to compensate for dissatisfaction in other areas. Workaholics according to some studies, are at higher risk for heart disease.
1 Timothy 6:6-10
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Do you see people fall into a trap that is foolish and harmful leading to destruction? The bible and it’s principles are timeless and relevant to daily life. Especially to those who think money will buy them happiness.
People who work more than the average 40 hours a week also tend to eat what is available and convenient….and less healthy. They have less time for exercise and many consume too much alcohol to ‘wind down’ whereas others smoke to relieve stress. Culminating factors that many phrase as, ‘a heart attack waiting to happen’.
Addictions to alcohol, cigarette smoking, and overeating become habits that people have a hard time overcoming. Let your addiction be Jesus and God’s word that heals. Carry it with you on your breaks, listen to it in music that is uplifting, and attend a church filled with the Holy Spirit. Contentment and peace are found in the presence of the Lord. He can satisfy that burning desire and need for love that money, alcohol, food and relationships never have. He can reach into the darkest place of pain in your soul and remove every shadow with His enduring light.
1 Timothy 6:11-12
But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
And best of all, there is no guilt, no shame, no hangover, no black tarry lungs, no excess weight gain, no chronic fatigue, no large credit cards to pay off; just peace and satisfaction in He who provides.
